Ruby is red corundum, the same mineral as sapphire, so it shares sapphire's hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale and suits jewellery that is worn often.
Colour
A ruby's value rests mostly on its colour: the most prized stones show a strong, even red. Cut and clarity matter too, because they decide how much of that colour you actually see.
Birthstone
Ruby is the birthstone for July.
Care
Clean ruby with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Ask us before using an ultrasonic cleaner, as not every stone or setting is suitable.
