Emerald Guide
Emerald is the green variety of the mineral beryl. At 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale it is softer than sapphire or diamond, and most emeralds contain natural inclusions, so they need a little more care, and the setting matters even more.
Colour and character
Depth and evenness of green count most. Inclusions are expected in emerald and often give each stone its character; what matters is that they do not dull the colour or weaken the stone.
Choosing a setting
Because emerald is softer, extra protection in the setting helps. With emerald rings, look at how well the basket and sides of the stone are protected. Pendants and earrings take fewer knocks than rings, which makes them a natural home for emerald.
Birthstone
Emerald is the birthstone for May.
Care
Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and harsh chemicals. Wipe emerald gently with a soft cloth and lukewarm water, and remove it before sport or heavy work.
